Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns held their second scrimmage - and 11th practice - of the spring on Saturday morning at Cajun Field.
The Cajuns conclude spring football next week with practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday before capping the spring season with the Annual Spring Game on Saturday, March 27 at noon.
The Spring Game is free to attend and the 2010 football pocket schedule will be available for all fans.
The Cajuns defense proved to have the upper hand on Saturday, collecting two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and eight sacks.
"I thought our defense came out with an attitude," head coach Rickey Bustle stated. "I'm proud of the plays made by our defense."
The tone was set early by the defense, as Dwight "Bill" Bentley intercepted an errant Chris Masson pass on the fourth play of the scrimmage. The offense had moved 17 yards in the previous three plays, but the interception swung the momentum toward the defense and increased their confidence after failing to register any turnovers in the spring's first scrimmage.
The next 10 plays saw the defense record four sacks, six tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery.
Starting from midfield on the following series, quarterback Blain Gautier rallied the offense thanks to a 35-yard and a 10-yard pass to tight end Jacob Maxwell. Two plays later, Gautier scored the first of his five rushing touchdowns on the day.
The next series also belonged to the offense. Brad McGuire ran three times for 12 yards and Masson hit Marlin Miller for 13 yards to set-up the offense's second touchdown. From the wildcat formation, McGuire took the direct snap and instead of running he lobbed a pass over the defense to tight end Ladarius Green, who beat everyone to the end zone for a 41-yard touchdown.
The defense then held the offense at bay for the next six series until Gautier connected with Maxwell for a 12-yard touchdown.
Maxwell led all receivers with five receptions for 88 yards.
"I'm disappointed with the offense," Bustle added. "They were sloppy. I saw too many turnovers and too many penalties. They beat themselves."
The Cajuns offense was sloppy at times, but moved the ball in spurts and capitalized in the red zone and goal line portions of the scrimmage, scoring eight times on 15 series starting at the 25-yard line or closer.
The defense created two turnovers inside the red zone and forced another short-yardage stop on a missed field goal.
