RALEIGH, N.C. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team finds itself in a tie for eighth place after 36 holes at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina State at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.
“I'm proud of the guys for fighting back after a tough round in the morning,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “We still have a great opportunity tomorrow. I think that this team hasn't played its best golf yet, and when they do look out. We just need to stick to the process and play smart tomorrow.”
The Cajuns posted a two-round score of 20-over par (596) and are tied with Memphis and Campbell to finish the day 19 strokes out of first.
East Carolina leads the field at one-over par (577) after surging back in the afternoon to shoot three-under par in the round. No.37 North Carolina (+2, 578), N.C. State (+11, 587), Western Carolina (+13, 589) and Maryland (+13, 589) round out the top five teams after day one.
Maryland's Andrew McClain and Western Carolina's J.T. Potson share the individual lead after carding a 36-hole score of two-under par (142).
Seniors Yohann Vora and Brandt Garon pace the Cajuns as they are tied for 15th after the first day at two-over par (146). Garon was one hole away from playing his first ever bogey-free round, while Vora had five birdies in the afternoon round.
“Brandt and Yohann really battled all day long,” Sliman stated. “I can't ask any more from those two guys.”
Kelsey Angelle finished the day in a tie for 57th at 10-over (154). The Cajuns other senior, Ethan Savoy, bounced back from a tough first round to tally a score of 76 in the afternoon to end up in a tie for 64th.
Freshman Thomas Strandemo rounds out the scoring for Louisiana in 70th after an uncharacteristic second round. Strandemo found himself in a tie for 17th after a first round score of 74, but couldn't hold the position carding an 87 in the afternoon round.
UL is grouped with UNCG and Rhode Island in the final round. Competition gets underway at 8 a.m. with teams slated to start off of holes 1 and 10.
