Box Score
After waiting almost two days to get the season underway, Daniel Nichols' eighth inning RBI single lifted the Ragin' Cajuns baseball team to a 1-0 win over Wichita State in the season opener at the CenturyLink Bobcat Invitational Saturday night in San Marcos, Texas.
Joe Zimmerman threw 5.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in a no decision for the Cajuns (1-0), while Jordan Harrison was tabbed with the win after 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Nichols was a perfect 2-for-2 on the evening at the plate and had UL's lone RBI while also drawing two walks. Ryan Leonards and Michael Strentz had the Cajuns other two hits in the contest.
The Cajuns threatened in the bottom of the second. With runners on first and second and two outs, Brian Bowman roped a ball to right center, but WSU's Kevin Hall made a great play to run the ball down in the air and end the threat.
After seven scoreless frames, UL broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the eighth when Nichols punched a ball through the left side of the infield scoring Strentz from second base on a close play at the plate.
Matt Hicks came in for the Cajuns in the ninth and shut the door on the Shockers to pick up his first career save.
UL returns to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they face Santa Clara in their second contest of the CenturyLink Bobcat Invitational.
