Track Set For Second Indoor Meet at McNeese
2/2/2012 11:54:00 PM | Track and Field
The Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field teams travel west on Interstate 10 on Friday to take part in their second meet of the 2012 season on the McNeese State campus in Lake Charles.
Louisiana, which opened the season with the McNeese Cowboy Indoor on Jan. 13, is taking part in the Jeff Davis/McNeese II indoor track and field meet in the Ralph O. Ward Rec-Complex.
The meet is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m., with the start of field events. Running events begin at 4 p.m. with the 55 meter hurdles.
Joining the Ragin' Cajuns for Friday's meet will be teams from McNeese State, Texas Southern, Nicholls State, Grambling, Southeastern Louisiana, Dillard, Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Northwestern State, Southern (BR), Southern (NO), Loyola and Arkansas Baptist.
UL looks to add to its growing number of individual titles in the first indoor season under the direction of first-year head coach Lon Badeaux. Through the first three weekends of the season, the Cajuns have picked up 10 titles.
The Cajuns expect strong results in the men's pole vault. Reigning Sun Belt Field Athlete of the Week Michael Vani is coming off a personal best vault of 5.10m/16-8 ¾ last weekend at Arkansas State. Chris Roy, a perennial first-place finisher, seeks to rebound from a slip up at ASU.
In the McNeese Cowboy Indoor, Roy took first place with a recorded height of 4.95m/16-2 ¾ and Vani placed third at 4.65m/15-3.
UL has several entries in the men's and women's weight throw and shot put. The Cajuns have at least five athletes participating in those events. Brittany Blunt, who set the school indoor record for women's weight throw at the Blue Raiders Invitational, seeks to continue her strong performance which includes to throws of 50-plus feet. Freshman Sander Maes makes his debut shot put.
For the first time this season Louisiana will have a distance medley team for both men and women competing.
On the track for the Cajuns women, Abi Brown takes part in the 200 meter and 400 meter dash and Anjel Thompson runs in the 55 meter dash and 55 meter hurdles.
On the track for the Cajuns men, freshman Micah Thomas seeks to improve upon his first 55 meter dash on the McNeese track (7.54 seconds in Cowboy Indoor). Courtland Privat and Willie Allen will represent UL in the 800 meter run while Kail Kidd takes part in the 1 mile run.
A complete recap of the Cajuns performance in the Jeff Davis/McNeese II indoor track and field meet will be posted on RaginCajuns.com Friday evening.
