LAFAYETTE, La. – A less than ideal weather forecast for the Lafayette area over the next two days prompted second year Louisiana head football coach Mark Hudspeth to switch the second scheduled day of spring practice from Friday to Thursday.
And the Ragin' Cajuns responded to the challenge and were ready, taking to the field at 2:40 p.m. for the second of the NCAA permitted 15 spring practice opportunities.
“I told the guys before spring practice started that they needed to be ready to come and practice every day, regardless of whether we had a practice on the schedule,” Hudspeth said. “When you only get 15 of these during the spring, you want to make sure that every one of them is run with as few distractions as possible and weather is usually the biggest distraction.
“We could have easily taken the practice indoors tomorrow, but with today being such a nice day outside, I decided that we would be better off moving the practice up instead of chancing bad weather,” Hudspeth added.
With a Saturday forecast of rain and thunderstorms, another schedule change could be in the works.
As for the practice itself, the Ragin' Cajuns took to the field on time at 2:40 p.m. for a practice that consisted of 24, five-minute intervals.
“I thought things went pretty well today,” Hudspeth said. “Our game plan going into the week was to use the first two practices to shake loose the cobwebs that came with not practicing for a little over two months.
“We practiced with a purpose. We didn't go through the motions and our guys got better.
“I was real happy with the retention level today. We installed a good portion of the offense and defense the other day and the players came back today and picked right up where we left off,” Hudspeth added.
With the first Saturday practice of the spring ahead, Hudspeth is looking forward to practicing in full pads for the first time.
“Everybody has looked good so far because practice just started, the guys all have fresh legs. We'll see who stands out when we put the pads on and start hitting,” Hudspeth said.
