Track Gets Outdoor Season Underway at McNeese Relays

LAKE CHARLES – The Ragin' Cajuns Track and Field team officially kicked off the 2012 outdoor campaign as a small contingent of athletes competed in the McNeese Cowboy Relays held Saturday, March 10 at Cowboy Track on the McNeese campus.
 
Kacey Elphage was the lone Cajun to hit the track as she partook in the women's 100 meter hurdles. Louisiana's other competitors came in the men's and women's javelin throw.
 
Elphage, a senior who transferred from SW Mississippi CC prior to the 2011 season, competed in just her second outdoor meet for the Cajuns. She clocked a time of 14.30 seconds to place third in the 100 meter hurdles.
 
A pair of freshmen highlighted the women's javelin throw for UL. Mayme Cook, a product of Notre Dame High School in Crowley, debuted with a distance of 43.71m/143-5 which placed her second in the event. Fellow freshman Amber Sharp (Anacoco, La) landed a throw of 39.85/130-9 in her collegiate debut.
 
In the men's javelin throw, seniors Casey Comeaux (2nd – 63.00m/206-8) and Chris Comeaux (6th – 57.30m/188-0) were the top two finishers of the group of four Cajuns who competed.
 
The outdoor season begins in earnest next weekend as the Cajuns field a full squad of athletes for the Louisiana Classics Track Meet being held at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility Thursday-Saturday, March 15-17.
