LAREDO, Texas – Senior Philipp Fendt is only three strokes back of first as the Ragin' Cajuns golf team sits in sixth place after an extremely windy first day at the Border Olympics hosted by the University of Houston at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
“I am very happy with Philipp," head coach Theo Sliman said. “Again he has put himself in a situation to win a tournament. He consistently comes out each week and plays like a senior leader. Hopefully he can draw on past tournaments and find himself on top at the end of the day tomorrow.”
Fendt is currently in a tie for fourth place overall after carding a 36-hole score of 144 (E). MJ Daffue of Lamar leads the field at three-under par (141).
The Cajuns are 12 strokes back of No. 31 Baylor for third place. UL posted a two-round total of 605 (+29). The conditions have played havoc on the tournament field as there isn't one team with a score under par after the first day.
“We weren't mentally tough as a team against these adverse conditions,” Sliman said. "It's somewhat disappointing due to the fact that we have a team that is loaded with experience. I would expect this kind of play out of a young team. We will have to come out and make adjustments to the conditions tomorrow as we continue to learn and apply.”
Junior Yohann Vora is in a tie for 37th at eight-over par (152). Chris Weninger (154) and Brandt Garon (155) round out the scoring for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Lamar leads the tournament at six-over par (582). Houston (585), Baylor (593), Central Arkansas (600) and Iowa State (601) round out the top-5.
The Cajuns tee off at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow in the final round of the Border Olympics.
