LAFAYETTE, La. – Second year head coach Mark Hudspeth was pleased with the progress that the Ragin' Cajuns football team show when it took part in its second intra-squad scrimmage of the spring practice season on Saturday, marking the end of its third week of spring drills.

“It was good to see the guys come today with the energy that they had,” Hudspeth said.  “I thought we competed hard and we were ready to go.

“Sometime you don't know what to expect with a Saturday morning practice but we came ready and started fast today.  The defense won the scrimmage at the end but I was overall pleased with the physicality that I saw.  It is something that we can use to build and improve on as we move forward towards the season,” Hudspeth added.

After losing a narrow scrimmage last weekend, the Ragin' Cajuns defense came through on Saturday, stifling the offense to claim the win.

“The defense has had a good week of practice and it showed,” Hudspeth said.  “I was pleased that they answered the challenge after the offense won last week and came back to finish on top today.  The showed great intensity, tackled hard and forced a couple of turnovers.

“The linebackers played pretty well, especially Qyen Griffin and (Boris) Anyama.  Qyen hasn't been on the defensive side of the ball very long but he is quickly picking things up and I am pleased with his progress.  Boris is coming on of late and is challenging for one of the linebacker spots.”

On the offensive side of the ball, sophomore guard Daniel Quave continues to excel on a veteran offensive line.

“Daniel is a big, physical lineman who continues to get stronger and better,” Hudspeth said.  “We had five guys last year who played almost every snap on the line last year and despite having four of those players back, we need to improve and develop our depth.  We need to have a solid backup at every position ready to go this season.”

Highlighting the effort of the offense on Saturday were long scoring plays by receivers Harry Peoples and Bradley Brown along with a long run by Montrel Carter, who has moved from receiver to running back.

The scrimmage marked the end of the ninth practice of the spring season, leaving six practices to come in the final two weeks the spring, culminating in the annual spring game on March 31 at 1:00 p.m. in Cajun Field.

“We've accomplished a lot so far this spring, but we can't stop here.  We have done a good job of installing our offensive and defensive schemes so we will spend time now to refine and improve our fundamentals and execution,” Hudspeth said.

“Most importantly, we need to continue to stay healthy but keep the hammer down,” Hudspeth added.
