Gonzaga Ends Cajuns Four-Game Win Streak

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end Friday afternoon as the Cajuns fell Gonzaga 6-1 at Wolff Field in the first game of the UTSA Classic in San Antonio, Texas.

UL (5-4) was outhit in the contest by Gonzaga (8-0) 11-4 with Ryan Leonards posting two of the Cajuns hits on the day.

Marco Gonzales picked up the win for the Bulldogs limiting Louisiana to just one run on three hits in 6.0 innings of work before leaving the game with an injury.

Jordan Nicholson was tabbed with the loss for the Cajuns after giving up six runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings to fall to 1-1 on the year.

Junior Derek Howell was great out of the bullpen for UL throwing 5.2 innings of one-hit relief to keep the Cajuns in the contest.

Gonzaga got out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second after plating three runs on five hits highlighted by a two-run single through the right side of the infield by Travis Forbes.

The Bulldogs increased their advantage to 5-0 in the third inning. With two outs, Maxx Garrett drew a walk. In the next at-bat Alex Stanford deposited a two-run homer over the fence in right.

In the top of the fourth, Gonzaga added a run on a RBI single by Steven Halcomb scoring Forbes from second base.

The Cajuns got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to center by Daniel Nichols scoring Leonards from third. Leonards led the inning off with a single to left center. He later moved to third on a single to right by Chase Compton.

UL threatened in the bottom of the seventh putting runners on second and third with two outs, but reliever Derek Peterson got out of the jam on a Tyler Girouard fly out to left center.

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they face Kansas in their second game of the UTSA Classic.
