LAFAYETTE, La. – The competition has definitely begun, evidence of which could be seen at the Ragin' Cajuns spring practice on Tuesday.
With the spring game just four days away, the Cajuns ratcheted up the intensity level during the 140-minute practice, which is a good sign according to head coach Mark Hudspeth.
“We had a great, spirited practice today and it was because I think our kids are becoming tougher and they are getting to where they love to compete,” Hudspeth said. “We are going to put them in as many competitive situations as possible.”
Increased competition is one of the reasons why Hudspeth has elected to format the annual Red vs. White spring game in a manner that will create the most competition possible. The game, which is free to the public, will be played on Saturday (March 31) beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Cajun Field.
“We want to have a game-like competitive atmosphere on Saturday,” Hudspeth said. “The coaching staff has been split up evenly into a red staff and a white staff and they will hold a draft on Wednesday to choose the sides.
“We have also split up the support staff and everybody else associated with the team. Even the ladies who cook for the team in the cafeteria have been given a team.”
Keeping with the Red vs. White spirit, Hudspeth has challenged the fans to step up, turn out and choose a side as well.
“I want our fans to come out on Saturday and have a great time,” Hudspeth said. “But I want them to dress accordingly and wear either red or white, depending on the team that they will be cheering for.”
Even though the teams have not been picked yet, the Red vs. White spirit was evident during Tuesday's practice as most position groups were openly commenting about which side would win, already cheering for the team their position coach had been assigned to.
And with any intense situation, the outcome of the practice was close.
“The offense came out today and really stuck it to the defense during the Oklahoma tackling drill at the beginning,” Hudspeth said. “But the defense came back and actually won the short scrimmage at the end of the practice.”
With both sides claiming victory in an important part of the session, Hudspeth turned to overtime to decide the day.
“We had to decide the winner of the practice so we went to a best of five first down drill,” Hudspeth said.
The defense claimed the drill by holding the offense to less than four yards on three of the five plays.
With Tuesday's practice complete, the Ragin' Cajuns have now finished 13 of the 15 practices allowed each spring under NCAA rules. UL will hold their final practice on Friday afternoon before ending the spring slate with the Red vs. White game on Saturday.
