BOCA RATON, Fla. - A second weather delay made field conditions unplayable and caused the middle game of the Louisiana-Florida Atlantic series at FAU Stadium, which was scoreless in the top of the third inning, to be suspended until Sunday morning.
The teams will resume Saturday's contest at 10 a.m. (CDT) with one out in the top of the third inning, Brian Bowman at the plate and Ryan Leonards on second base and the teams deadlocked at 0-0.
The series finale will begin 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended contest.
Before Saturday's contest even began, lightning was detected in the vicinity of FAU Stadium at approximately 2:30 p.m. (CDT), pushing the start of the contest - originally scheduled for 3 p.m. (CDT) - back to 3:49 p.m. (CDT).
Following the 49-minute delay, both pitchers made quick work of the lineups in the first inning. FAU's Bo Logan used only 11 pitches and benefitted from a double play. UL's Chris Griffitt needed only 10 pitches to retire the Owls in order.
Griffitt labored more in the second inning, tossing 26 pitches, but scooped up a bases loaded grounder from Mitch Morales to keep FAU off the scoreboard.
Ryan Leonards used a push bunt to get aboard leading off the Cajuns half of the third. Following a sacrifice bunt by Chris Sinclair, lightning was detected in the vicinity of the park and a second weather delay ensued at 4:20 p.m. (CDT).
Not long after the second delay began, rain showers began to fall and persisted for the next hour leading to the decision to suspend the contest. With nearly the entire infield dirt covered in water, officials decided to suspend the contest at 5:30 p.m. (CDT).
BASES NOTED: Tyler Frederick led off the game with a single, extending his season-best hitting streak to eight games…The hitting streak is the second longest streak of Frederick's career (had a 13-game hit streak from March 9-30, 2010)…The double play that FAU turned in the first inning on a Jace Conrad grounder marked only the 10th time this season that the Cajuns grounded into a double play.
