BATON ROUGE, La. – After a slow start in the morning round, the Ragin' Cajuns golf team recovered with a strong showing in the afternoon to finish in a tie for fifth after day one of the LSU National Invitational at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
“I think our guys did a good job to bounce back from our morning round, head coach Theo Sliman said. “We talk a lot as a team about learning and applying. Its time we start applying what we have learned. We don't have much golf left in the season and this team has surely learned a lot this year.”
Louisiana posted a 301 in the first round, but was 11 strokes better in the second round to card a 36-hole total of 591 (+15). The Cajuns currently sit in a tie with Louisiana Tech and Iowa State for fifth and are six strokes back of Purdue for third.
Junior Brandt Garon paced UL on day one after recording a two-round score of 145 (+1) for 14th place. Andrew Noto is only two strokes back of Garon in a tie for 17th at three-over par (147).
“I'm particularly proud of Brandt,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “He has showed a lot of patience and discipline. Both he and Andrew are local guys and it is showing this weekend with their performances.”
Both Phillip Fendt and Chris Weninger are just outside the top 25 with a score of six-over par (150) in a tie for 26th. Weninger had a team-best round of 70 in the afternoon round.
No.34 Iowa (568), No.24 LSU (574), Purdue (585), Minnesota (587), Louisiana (591), Louisiana Tech (591) and Iowa State (591) round out the top 5 teams at the event. Minnesota's Erik Van Rooyen sits atop the leaderboard at six-under par (138).
The Cajuns are slated to tee off in the final round of the tournament at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. Follow live scoring for the LSU National Invitational by clicking here.
