MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team battled tough conditions to rise to fifth place after day one of the Sun Belt Golf Championship at the Shoals Golf Course on Monday afternoon.

“We dropped a lot of our shots with our short game,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “It's uncharacteristic for our team to play the way they did around the green. With the conditions here, things can change in a hurry in only a couple holes. We have a great opportunity in front of us. We need to come out and perform well tomorrow.”

Not one team posted a score under-par as both No.27 North Texas and No.47 Middle Tennessee are in a tie for first at 10-over par (298). UL currently sits 13 strokes back of the Blue Raiders after carding an 18-hole score of 23-over par (311). The Cajuns are only five strokes back of South Alabama for third place.

Seniors Andrew Noto and Philipp Fendt lead the Cajuns in a tie for 16th overall at five-over par (77). Chris Weninger sits just one stroke back of Noto and Fendt in a tie for 23rd after carding a score of six-over par (78).

“Philipp got off to a mediocre start and hung in there late in the round,” Sliman said. “The final three holes here are very challenging, and Philipp was able to finish them under par which is very impressive.

“Andrew was poised to have a good round today. His ball striking was top notch in these conditions, but his putter was cold. All he needs is for a couple shots to fall tomorrow and he will be in good shape.”

Brandt Garon rounds out the scoring for the Cajuns in a tie for 28th at seven-over par (79), while Yohann Vora is tied for 40th with a score of 11-over par (83).

North Texas' Ty Spinella  leads the field at the SBC Golf Championship after day one posting the only score under par firing a 71 (-1).

No.27 North Texas (298), No.47 Middle Tennessee (298), South Alabama (306), UALR (308) and Louisiana (311) round out the top five teams at the Sun Belt Golf Championship.
