GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team overcame its habit of first round jitters on Thursday posting an 18-hole score of seven-over par (295) to finish day one of the Greensboro Regional in a tie for sixth.
“We are pleased with our start, but there is definitely room to improve,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “We were able to get the monkey off of back in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a solid first day. Even though we had a good day overall, we still left a bit out there coming down the stretch, but that has left the guys hungry to get back out there.
“This team feels that our best golf is still ahead of us. That is very promising going into tomorrow with a chance to move up in the field.”
Louisiana, who is tied with Lamar, is just two strokes back of Tulsa and UNLV for third place and 12 shots back of Liberty for the tournament lead.
The Cajuns were paced by junior Brandt Garon on day one as the Baton Rouge native carded a score of one-under par (71) to sit in a tie for ninth overall. The 71 is the lowest first round score by Garon in the 2011-12 season.
“It took Brandt a semester or so to get comfortable with things here at UL, but now I'd say he looks very comfortable with things here,” Sliman stated. “Brandt is a player that just continues to rise to the occasion and play big when we need him to. Hopefully he will only continue to improve as we close out the year.”
Seniors Andrew Noto and Philipp Fendt are currently tied for 24th with an 18-hole score of two-over par (74).
Both Yohann Vora and Chris Weninger sit two strokes back of Noto and Fendt in a tie for 39th overall with a first round score of four-over par (76).
“I expect the whole team to improve tomorrow,” Sliman said. “Our goal and expectation for tomorrow is to improve our position as a team so that we can have a good tournament and qualify for nationals.”
No.32 Liberty (283), No.41 SMU (288), Tulsa (293), No.9 UNLV (293) and No.44 Texas Tech (294) round out the top five teams after the first day of the Greensboro Regional. SMU's Matt Schovee sits atop the individual leaderboard after posting a score of five-under par (67).
UL is slated to tee off first tomorrow with the first group going off at 8:25 a.m. Live stats for the Greensboro Regional are available on golfstat.com.
