LAFAYETTE, La. – Softball senior players Ashley Brignac and Christi Orgeron were honored by the Sun Belt Conference for their academic and athletic achievements as student-athletes during Tuesday night's conference annual spring meeting in Sandestin, Fla.

Brignac was honored with the Post-Graduate Scholarship Award, which is given in recognition of superior acadmic achievement. The River Ridge, La. native will receive a check for $4,500 for use toward future education.  Orgeron was named the Female Student-Athlete of the Year after leading the Cajuns to a 52-4 record and a regional title this past weekend in Lafayette, La.

Brignac received her Bachelors of Science Degree in the fall of 2011 and was named the university's Overall Outstanding Graduate.  Impressively, the fifth-year senior, never received a grade other than an "A" during her time as an undergraduate student.  That is no small feat for someone who has dozens of athletic awards, is an active participant in community service projects, is a member of multiple university clubs and has had multiple research projects published.

During her time this spring with the nationally ranked Ragin' Cajuns softball team, Brignac has been working on additional prerequisites for medical school.  Brignac is hopeful to attend graduate school or medical school to undergo a master's degree or PhD in either exercise science or biomechanics.

Louisiana Director of Athletics Scott Farmer recently described Ms. Brignac as "the best student-athlete I have ever been associated with.  She epitomizes the term student-athlete because she possesses outstanding leadership, athletic, academic and personal skills."

Orgeron is unquestionably one of the most prolific hitters in Sun Belt Conference history.  Last season, she completed a sweep of the "Triple Crown" categories in the Sun Belt - leading the league in batting average (.414), homeruns (23) and runs batted in (101).  Orgeron became only the fourth played in NCAA history to compile over 100 RBIs.

This season the senior from New Orleans has not let up, guiding the Ragin' Cajuns to a top-ten national ranking and yet another Sun Belt Conference Championship season.  Impressively, the All-American and Team USA Softball member has also amassed a 3.5 grade point average and will graduate in May.

Orgeron was named to the Sun Belt Conference's Academic Honor Roll in 2009 and 2010, and was named to the league's Commissioner's List in 2008 and 2011.

Ragin' Cajun softball coach Stefni Lotief recently said that Orgeron "shows leadership beyond her years."  And, "she plays at an elite level while being a role model, community leader, and great teammate.  She represents the Sun Belt Conference with dignity and pride throughout the country."
