Cajuns Set to Begin NCAA East Prelims on Thursday

NCAA East Preliminary Round Meet Central
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Seven of the Ragin' Cajuns 15 participants at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds begin their quest for a spot in the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus.
When competing in the NCAA Preliminary Rounds, the top 12 finishers in each open and relay event will qualify for the national semifinal and final rounds of the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships to be held at Drake Stadium at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 6-9.
Kicking off the competition for the Ragin' Cajuns contingent will be Casey Comeaux in the men's javelin throw at 11 a.m. (EDT). Comeaux qualified for the prelims with a throw of 63.00m/206-8 at the McNeese Cowboy Relays in March.
The freshman duo of Joshua Sigler and Devin Davis take part in the men's long jump at 1 p.m. (EDT) They finished as the top two performers in the Sun Belt Outdoor championships, with Davis claiming the title at 7.22m/23-8 ¼.
Wrapping up field events for UL at 4:30 p.m. (EDT) will be freshman Mayme Cook and senior Kirsten Meche in the women's javelin throw. Cook, a Notre Dame High of Crowley product, has performed well in the women's javelin throw this season notching a distance of 40-plus meters each time out and is coming off of a distance of 43.41m/142-5 in the SBC Championships.
In Thursday's track events, held in the evening, Justin Jones and Alexis Malone will compete in the 100 meter dash. Jones is scheduled to run the men's 100 meters at 6:30 p.m. (EDT), with Malone to follow in the women's 100 meters at 6:55 p.m. (EDT).
Jones and Malone are seeking a berth into the quarterfinal round which is set for Friday. The Top 3 per heat and next nine fastest will move into the quarterfinals.
In field events, the Top 12 in each event on Thursday will earn a spot in the national finals in Des Moines.
The remaining eight Ragin' Cajuns are set to compete in the preliminary round on Friday.
The University of North Florida will provide both live results and the live video stream of the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on its official athletics website at www.unfospreys.com.
