LAFAYETTE, La. - For the first time since 2006 the Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team has earned a spot in the final ITA Men's Division I Team Rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Wednesday.
“What a great honor for the team as this is the first time since 2006 that the Cajun Men's Tennis Team has finished inside the top 75,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “This is a sign that we are just getting started, and the best is definitely yet to come”.
The Cajuns posted the second highest win total in coach Jeffrey's tenure finishing the year with a 15-8 record including four wins over ranked opponents.
“Finishing the year in the top 75 was definitely one of our goals before the season began,” Jeffrey added. “Being ranked as high as No. 47 and finishing in the final rankings really will cement our place among the college elite for the next nine months until the rankings come out again in January next year.
“The national and worldwide exposure we are getting from finishing inside the top 75 has already taken effect. We have scheduled 10 of the top 75 teams nationally for next year, and recruiting is at an all-time high with us bringing in the 16th rated class in the nation. The program is now recruiting itself which will help us elevate to a higher level in years to come”.
In addition to bringing in the 16th ranked recruiting class, UL returns six starters from the 2011-12 season including four players with 10-plus wins in singles play. The Ragin' Cajuns will host the 2013 Sun Belt Tennis Championships as the Cajuns will look to claim their first conference title since 2006.
