Women's Hoops Steps Away From Court to Serve the Community

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team reached out to the community on Thursday and participated in the United Way of Acadiana Day of Action.

The Day of Action is an opportunity for hundreds of volunteers to give thousands of hours of time to impact the communities of Lafayette, Acadia, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Coaches and players from the UL women's basketball program traveled to the Granberry Boys and Girls Club, where they read books and did enrichment activities with the kids. Working with around 50 kids, the players were divided up into groups as they were involved in art projects, sang songs, and read the children's books Goodnight NOLA, Today is Monday in Louisiana and Down in Louisiana to relate the kids to the Cajun heritage.

The team then helped set up and clean Mr. Keet's restaurant in Maurice to put on a Cajun Comedy hosted by Goodwill Industries last evening. After the comic performance, the players signed autographs and took pictures with the fans.

"We are thrilled to be able to get involved in our community and help the people of Lafayette,” head coach Garry Brodhead said. “Our student athletes and coaches are in a great position to be active in our community and serve others. Servant leadership is one of the main qualities that we want to build in our women's basketball program, and being an active participant in our city is one of the ways we will do that.

“We want to thank the United Way of Acadiana for allowing us to be a part of their Day of Action. I'd also like to thank Jim Richard of Goodwill Industries for allowing us to be a part of their Cajun Comedy event and meet some great fans."
