LAFAYETTE – The Ragin' Cajuns baseball program added to its 2012-13 signing class this week as head coach Tony Robichaux announced the addition of a pair of athletes who played significant roles in leading LSU-Eunice to the 2012 NJCAA Division II national championship.
Signing a national letter of intent to attend UL and play baseball beginning with the 2012-13 academic year were infielder Sam Carriere (Norco, La. – Destrehan HS) and left-handed pitcher Cody Boutte (New Iberia, La. – New Iberia Senior HS).
Carriere competed at LSU-Eunice the past two seasons. Boutte spent his freshman season at LSU-Shreveport, before transferring to LSU-Eunice for the 2012 campaign, helping Carriere and the Bengals capture the national title.
Both will be juniors with two seasons of eligibility.
“Cody and Sam are great additions to our program,” Robichaux said. “Both played at a high level and won a national championship.
“Cody helps us replace the loss of a pitcher to the draft and Sam will help next year's team as a run producer.”
Carriere was one of the Bengals' top run producers on the way to the 2012 national title. He ranked second on the club with 60 RBI and his 81 base hits were the team's benchmark.
Carriere finished his sophomore campaign with a .329 average, 16 doubles and five home runs and accrued 21 stolen bases in 23 attempts.
Over his two-year stay in Eunice, the Destrehan High product accumulated 158 base hits and 114 RBI. In his rookie campaign, Carriere produced a .367 average, 77 hits and 54 RBI.
Boutte joins the Ragin' Cajuns after being named the Most Valuable Pitcher of the NJCAA Divsion II Baseball World Series in Enid, Okla. The New Iberia Senior High product started and pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) with three walks and 11 strikeouts as LSUE topped Western Oklahoma 7-3 in the national championship game.
Prior to the national championship game start, the New Iberia native kept the Bengals alive by tossing 8 2/3 innings and holding Scottsdale Community College to two runs in a 3-2 elimination game victory. Boutte took the mound one day after LSUE dropped their World Series opener to Des Moines Area Community College.
Boutte, a left-handed pitcher, posted a 9-1 record with a 1.82 ERA this past season. He worked 99 innings for the Bengals, covering 17 appearances, and limited opponents to 86 hits and a .232 average.
As a freshman at LSU-Shreveport, Boutte tallied a 7-2 record with a 5.48 ERA, 69 strikeouts and two complete games in 70 2⁄3 innings of work. He helped the Pilots advance to the NAIA Baseball World Series, where they finished one game short of the championship round.
Carriere and Boutte join Caleb Adams (Texarkana, Texas – Texas HS), Seth Harrison (Houston, Texas – Hill College), Dexter Kjerstad (Amarillo, Texas – Howard JC), Matthew Plitt (Texas City, Texas – Galveston College), Joe Robbins (Pineville, La. – Tioga HS) and Kody Smith (Orange, Texas – Baton Rouge CC) in signing national letters of intent with the Ragin' Cajuns during the regular signing period (April 11-August 1).
The Cajuns' 2012-13 signing class also includes high school standouts Blake Trahan (Kinder, La.- Kinder HS), Nick Thurman (Belle Chasse, La. – Belle Chasse HS), and Lance Quebodeaux (Lake Charles, La. – Sam Houston HS) plus junior college prodcuts Ryan Wilson (Owasso, Okla. – Seminole State College) and Ashton Goudeau (Union, Mo. – Maplewood JC) who signed during the early signing period in November.
