LAFAYETTE, La. -- Brett Baer, who is ahead of the pace to end his career as the most accurate kicker in NCAA Division I history, has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2012 Lou Groza Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top kicker by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

Baer, a semifinalist for the award in 2011, is one of 30 kickers on the list.

“Brett proved time after time on the field last year that he is one of the top kickers in the nation, and I expect that he will play a major role in our success again this season,” UL head coach Mark Hudspeth said.

A senior exercise science major from Brandon, Miss., Baer was a second team All-Sun Belt selection in 2011 after leading the nation in field goal accuracy (min. 10 attempts).  He was 18-for-20 (.900) on field goal attempts and 46-for-50 on extra points.  He enters the 2012 season having made 11 straight field goal attempts, three short of Mike Shafer's school record, which was set in 1974.

Baer made two field goals as time expired to give UL victories last year, including a career-long 50-yard kick in a 32-30 win over San Diego State in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

A fixture in the UL record books, his team-leading 100 points in 2011 were the most by a UL kicker and third-best overall, trailing the record 114 by Tyrell Fenroy (2008) and Brian Mitchell (1988).  His 18 field goals last season were the second-highest single season total in school history, just one short of the record of 19 by John Roveto in 1977, and his 46 extra points were also second best, four shy of the record of 50 by Drew Edmiston in 2008.

Baer begins his senior campaign with a career field goal percentage of .926 (25-27), which is ahead of the NCAA record of .878 (43-49) by Florida's Bobby Raymond from 1983-84, but he will need to attempt 18 more kicks to meet the required minimum of 45 career attempts.

Twenty semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 5, after which, a panel of more than 300 experts will select the three finalists for the award with the announcement coming on Monday, Nov. 19.  The winner will be announced during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards show, which will be broadcast live from Orlando, Fla. on Dec. 6.

The award is named in honor of NFL Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns.  He won four NFL championships during his career, being named he 1954 NFL Player of the Year.
