LAFAYETTE, La. - The nationally ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis squad was one of 76 teams to earn the ITA All-Academic Team distinction, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Wednesday. This is the second straight year that the program has received the honor.
“I'm proud to say that our men's tennis team's average GPA over the past several years has been consistently above a 3.25,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “Part of the team goals that we list every year is to have a team GPA of a 3.25 or higher, and our student-athletes have answered the call every year.
“We ask a lot of these guys to perform on a national stage and be a part of the top 10 percentile athletically, and then turn around and ask these guys to be above average in the classroom. Earning an honor like this speaks volumes to their work ethic, sense of pride, and understanding of present and life goals they are trying to achieve.”
Daniel Alban, Carl Alberton, Brandon Farine and Yanick Mandl received individual recognition. The group was named to the ITA Scholar Athlete list for posting a 3.5 GPA during the 2011-12 season.
“Being average is just not part of our student-athlete's expectations at this University,” Jeffrey added. ”Performing at a high level on the court and in the classroom is the norm for this program. You have to build a sense of worth that if you come here as a student-athlete you will be in an environment of success at all levels”.
The Cajuns finished the 2012 season with a 15-8 record and found themselves in the final ITA rankings for the first time since 2006.
