LAFAYETTE – Ragin' Cajuns second baseman Jace Conrad and pitcher Cord Cockrell, both playing summer baseball for the Kelowna (British Columbia) Falcons, were selected to appear in the 2012 West Coast League All-Star Game. League president Ken Wilson announced the All-Star rosters earlier this week.
Conrad and Cockrell are members of the East division team, with Conrad serving as the squad's second baseman and Cockrell being one of 10 pitchers named to the team.
In total, 42 players were named to the East division and West division squads, which will meet Tuesday, July 24 at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla, Washington. First pitch is set for 9:35 p.m. (CDT).
Wenatchee AppleSox coach Ed Knaggs will lead the East, while Corvallis Knights skipper Brooke Knight will guide the West all-stars.
Conrad and Cockrell joined six other Kelowna teammates in helping their squad post a league-best eight representatives for the game.
Conrad, who encountered 239 chances during his rookie campaign and committed only four errors for the Cajuns in 2012, is hitting .297 through 36 games played for the Falcons this summer. The Lafayette High product's 38 base hits rank second on the squad (Top 10 in the WCL) and he's struck out only 12 times in 145 plate appearances.
Conrad started the summer session with at least one hit in 13 of the season's first 14 games, accruing a .441 average during the stretch. Through Wednesday's play he had produced 13 multiple-hit games.
Cockrell also debuted with the Cajuns last season, making 20 appearances which were second-most on the pitching staff. He logged 40 innings, held opponents to 10 extra base hits and struck out 32. During summer league play, the Acadiana High product has posted a 5-2 record and 2.23 ERA over nine appearances (seven starts) for Kelowna.
Cockrell has worked at least six complete innings in four of his seven starts this summer. On June 25 he held the Bend Elks to four hits and struck out five over eight innings of work in an 8-1 victory.
The Cajuns duo has helped lead Kelowna to a 21-16 record through Wednesday, July 18. The club stands in third place in the East division, trailing the Bellingham Bells (22-14) by 1-1/2 games for a playoff spot with three weeks remaining in the regular season. The top two teams in both the East and West divisions play a best-of-three divisional series to determine who will play for the championship.
