Countdown to Kickoff 2012...Hudspeth Happy With Effort

LAFAYETTE, LA. – As preseason camp edges near the midway point for the Ragin' Cajuns football team, the team hit a high point on Monday when it strung together two quality sessions.
“Today was probably the best day of practice this fall,” head coach Mark Hudspeth said. “We practiced today with a sense of urgency when we were moving around the field and we competed hard. The offense pushed the defense and the defense pushed back. We made some great strides.
The Cajuns were well rested entering the day, having Sunday off following a spirited scrimmage on Saturday.
“I am sure that getting their legs back a little had something to do with practicing well,” Hudspeth said.
Hudspeth was so happy with the full contact practice in the morning that he changed the afternoon practice from one in partial uniforms to a simple walkthrough, allowing the UL players to build on their effort from Saturday and make some adjustments.
With a couple of days to watch the film from Saturday, Hudspeth remained upbeat about the squad's effort.
“I think offensively, we are ahead of where we were last year at this time,” Hudspeth said. “The depth that we have at receiver was evident throughout the scrimmage. They are really playing well.
“We are also seeing the signs that we are going to have some quality depth on the offensive line this fall, which was an area of concern coming out of spring practice. We aren't there yet, by the effort I saw on Saturday was promising.”
Second year defensive coordinator Greg Stewart was cautiously optimistic about the production of the defense. “We are just about where we thought we'd be right now. We've got some talent out there right now but they haven't played much so it is important that we keep getting in our reps,” Stewart said.
“I thought we got better on Saturday because we played hard. One of our goals for the scrimmage was to improve on our perimeter play and I think we did that.
“We've got three weeks before we face Lamar and things are coming together nicely. This defense is going to get better and better the more we play but for now, we still have a long way to go,” Stewart added.
LAGNIAPPE: Evidence of the happiness of the squad came post-practice in the evening when as the players soaked in the cold tubs – large tubs of water filled with cold water that help the players cool down and relax their bodies – a very spirited rendition of 100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall could be heard echoing throughout the complex. . . fans are reminded that even though season ticket sales are at an all-time high, there is still time to reserve their seats for the 2012 campaign. . . season tickets are available by visiting the Ragin' Cajuns Ticket Central online at RaginCajuns.com or by calling (337) 265-2357.
