LAFAYETTE, La. – Coming off of an appearance in the NCAA Regionals a year ago, Ragin' Cajuns head golf coach Theo Sliman released a challenging 2012-13 schedule for his squad on Friday.
Like the previous year, Sliman has slated a loaded schedule as the Cajuns will face a number of teams ranked in the top 25 throughout the year.
“This schedule will prepare our guys to make a return trip to the postseason,” Sliman said. “Having elevated the schedule for the second straight season will prepare our golfers for the tough stretch at the end of the spring season. We have a less experienced squad this year, but I feel that this schedule will quickly acclimate the newcomers to the collegiate level.”
Louisiana is set to play in four fall tournaments, starting the fall season on Sept. 10 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg. Miss. UL then heads to the prestigious Golf Week Challenge in Burlington, Iowa the following week (Sept. 16-18).
The Ragin' Cajuns head to the David Toms Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La. on Oct. 6-7 before closing out the fall with a return trip to the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Oct. 19-20.
In the spring, the Cajuns have seven tournaments on the docket highlighted by the 28th Annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette March 4-5.
“We had a great field at the Louisiana Classics a year ago, and I expect the same kind of field this year,” Sliman added. “This really is one of the top 15 tournaments of the year with the support it has garnered over the years. Hosting the Louisiana Classics is definitely the highlight and pinnacle of our year.”
UL opens the spring slate Feb. 11-12 at the Oak Hill Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
The Cajuns will also go to the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala. (Feb. 18-19), the Argent Financial Classic in Choudrant, La. (March 11-12), and the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate in West Point, Miss. (Apr. 8-9).
The Sun Belt Championships will be held in Muscle Shoals, Ala. again this year with competition taking place April 22-24.
The Cajuns return two starters from the 2011-12 NCAA regional team in All-Sun Belt selection Brandt Garon and Yohann Vora. Sliman is entering his fifth year at the helm of the program and has had at least one player reach postseason play in each of the last three seasons.
