Soccer Opens Homestand With Houston, Nicholls Contest Moved

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns soccer team opens a three-match homestand starting on Friday at 7 p.m. as the Cajuns face Conference USA foe Houston at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. The Nicholls State contest originally scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday has been moved to Monday at 1 p.m. due to the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac.
 
“Houston is traditionally a solid program,” head coach Scot Wieland said. ”We have them at home and that gives us an edge. Our girls have built up some tremendous confidence over the first three games, and I look for them to come out strong this weekend.”
 
UL (2-1) is facing the Cougars (1-2) for the ninth time in the program's history with Houston holding 7-1 series edge.
 
The Cajuns are coming off of a tough 1-0 loss to SEC power Ole Miss on the road. Louisiana had several opportunities in the match to even the contest but came up short.
 
On the season, UL is 1-0 at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility after a 4-0 defeat of Prairie View A&M a week ago.
 
Freshman Elizabeth Manuel leads the team with three points, while the Cajuns have had six different players notch a goal in the first three contests.
 
Senior Amanda Moorefield ranks third in the Sun Belt with a 0.65 goals against average. Moorefield already has one shutout on the season and is the UL career leader in wins with 19.
 
After the Houston contest, Louisiana will look for revenge against the Colonels on Labor Day. The Cajuns suffered a 2-1 blow from NSU a year ago after a goal in the 86th minute by the Colonels broke a 1-all tie.
 
“Our girls will definitely be out for revenge,” Wieland added. “They got us at their place (last year) and our girls haven't forgotten that game. I fully expect the team will be ready for some payback.”
