LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Houston Friday night in the first of three straight contests at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
“Our mistakes really cost us tonight, and unfortunately Houston capitalized on them,” head coach Scot Wieland said. “A simple mistake cost us on the first goal, and we just weren't the same after that. We just have to eliminate the mistakes.”
The Cajuns (2-2-0) held a 7-6 edge in shots, while the Cougars (2-2-0) led in corners 4-3.
Louisiana came out aggressive in the match forcing Houston keeper Cami Koski to make a save on Kayla Henrie header in the first minute.
“For the first 25 minutes of the game we were in control,” Wieland stated. “We just couldn't keep up the intensity and that hurt us.”
The Cougars ended a scoreless tie in the 27th minute when Kayla Walker settled a long pass and beat a defender to slot the ball on the ground past keeper Amanda Moorefield for a goal.
In the second half, senior Erin Lynn just missed evening the contest at 1-all as Koski managed to punch the shot by Lynn over the crossbar in the 63rd minute.
Houston increased its advantage to 2-0 on a goal by Katelyn Rhodes in the 71st minute. Rhodes one timed a pass from Walker past Moorefield to notch her first goal of the season.
Lynn got the Cajuns on the board in the 82nd minute when she one timed a pass from Elizabeth Manuel into the back of the net to pull Louisiana within a goal. The goal was the second of the year for Lynn.
“Erin's goal was an example of what we can do when we don't make any mistakes,” Wieland added. “Unfortunately we couldn't add another one to send the match to overtime.”
UL returns to action on Monday at 1 p.m. when Nicholls State comes town for a non-conference match at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
