LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns soccer team posted two goals in the second half in a comeback win over Nicholls State, 2-1, on Monday afternoon at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
“I'm proud of our second-half effort,” head coach Scot Wieland said. “We were able to gain composure and keep possession, and that is why we had success.”
The Cajuns (3-2-0) outshot Nicholls State 16-8 in the contest with 12 of the 16 shots coming in the second half. UL also had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Nicholls State grabbed a 1-0 edge in the 20th minute when Annie Newell headed a cross from Jess Coates into the back of the net.
Senior Amanda Moorefield stepped up and made a crucial save for the Cajuns in the 27th minute on a shot by Spencer Valdespino to keep the Colonels lead to one goal.
“Amanda has played big for us in her four years here.” Wieland said. “That's what you expect from a fifth-year captain, and she does it well.”
The Cajuns would go to the half down by the same score as Nicholls held a 5-4 lead in shots at the break.
“In the first half we did not maintain possession of the ball, and that led to us falling behind 1-0,” Wieland stated. “At halftime we told them to keep possession, and we did just that.”
The change in possession led to Louisiana's first goal in the 68th minute when senior Maci Andrus sent a ball off of the crossbar into the goal to even the match at 1-all. The goal was the first of the year for Andrus.
With less than four minutes remaining in the contest Hayden Gibson gave the Ragin' Cajuns the game-winning goal as she rocketed a left-footed shot from 18-yards out past NSU keeper Amanda Boylson.
The game-winning goal is the first of Gibson's career and also her first of the season.
Louisiana is slated to close out its three-game homestand on Friday at 7 p.m. when the Cajuns host in-state rival Southern at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. The match is also the final home tune up for the Cajuns before conference play begins on Sept. 21.
