Cajuns Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Day One of ITA Southern Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships with a good showing at the Alabama Tennis Center on Thursday.
Louisiana saw two players move on to the round of 16 in the singles main draw, while all four Cajuns who competed at the Houston Futures this past weekend came up on the wrong end of a decision
"All of our guys who played in the Houston Futures were a bit exhausted," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "It's a lot to ask a player to go out there when he is playing at 20% energy. Edgar played a ranked player today at 20% and still almost won."
After notching a gusty win in the opening round against Sean Donohue of Alabama, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, junior Jarred Wynan dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Dante Saleh of Auburn.
Junior Damian Farinola topped Iain Sneddon of Tulane in the opening round, 6-1, 6-1. Farinola was knocked from the main draw in the round of 32 by fourth seeded Daniel Leitner of South Alabama, 7-5, 6-1.
Both Edger Lopez and Jake Wynan fell in their opening round match.
"Damian had chances against Daniel Leitner of South Alabama who is ranked 50th nationally," Jeffrey stated. "He was also playing at 20% and was facing Leitner in his second match of the day."
Sophomore twins Hunter and Yates Johnson each moved on to the round of 16. Hunter defeated UAB's Luiz Pinto, 6-2, 6-3, while Yates bested fellow Blazer Nick Ianuzzi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
"Hunter and Yates both performed well and played solid to pick up a couple wins," Jeffrey added. "I thought Will Huyton played tough despite losing in three sets to the No. 3-4 player from LSU. So it was a tough day and is to be expected considering the circumstances."
Huyton went to three sets with Boris Arias of LSU, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
