Soccer Welcomes Sun Belt Newcomer Texas State

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team will play their second-to-last home contest Friday when they take on the Texas State Bobcats at 7:00 p.m. at the Cajuns Soccer Complex.

The Cajuns come into the match holding down the second spot in the conference standings and a 7-5-2 overall record, while going 4-1 in conference play.

The Cajuns have rebounded well after a 1-4-2 start to the season, winning six of their last seven games.

Offensively they are led by a dynamic duo of freshmen in Annika Schmidt and Yazmin Montoya. Schmidt is tied for the conference lead with 10 goals and leads the team in points with 23 on the season. Montoya is not far behind with 17 points, scoring six goals and adding five assists.

Defensively they are led by the reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week in Grace Howell-Harries. Howell-Harries is coming off of a three-point weekend that saw her notch her second career goal and third career assist. The junior captain has played in every single minute of the season for the Cajuns' back line.

In the nets the Cajuns have found success with a tandem-goalkeeping system, which sees Cory DeMarco start the game and Kendall Graham take over at halftime for the past six games. In the last eight games the duo combines for a 0.75 goals against average, and just six goals, while picking up four clean sheets.

The Cajuns will finish up the 2013 regular season next week, with a mid-week game at South Alabama on Thursday and then return home for Senior Day, on Sunday, Oct. 27.

They are almost a lock to make the Sun Belt Tournament, for the first time since 2010.

The tournament is hosted by Texas State, starting on November 6 in San Marcos, Texas.
