BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Both Hunter and Yates Johnson have reached the third round of singles qualifying at the USTA Birmingham Futures event held this past weekend at the Highland Park Tennis Center.

Yates defeated Ernesto Farinas of Venezuela, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round, but saw his singles run come to an end dropping a hard fought 6-4, 7-5 decision to David Fox of Great Britain in the third round.

"Yates played steady tennis," volunteer assistant coach Jeff Johnson said. " He is taking his opportunities at the right time. Being patient and aggressive worked well for Yates in his second round match.

"It was good to see Yates get off to a quick start in the third round going up 3-0. Unfortunately, Fox fought back and took the first set 6-4. The second set came down to the wire with Fox breaking a 5-5 to close out the second set."

Hunter Johnson had to wait a day to play his second round match due to rain and notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Amyn Soldier-Mukadam. His third round match is scheduled for Monday.

"Hunter came out and over powered his opponent today," Johnson added. "I look for him to compete hard tomorrow."

The duo is slated to start doubles competition on Tuesday in the main draw. For updates and info follow the team on twitter @CajunMensTennis.
