HOUSTON, Texas – Junior Damian Farinola and sophomore Edgar Lopez became the first pair of Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis players in program history to reach the main draw on Monday at the USTA Houston Futures event.
Lopez defeated Rodney Vickers 6-3, 6-3, while Farinola downed Brandon Donaldson 6-3, 6-0. Farinola is slated to play his first round match tomorrow. Lopez's first round match isn't until Wednesday.
"Damian and Edgar both came out with the right attitude from the beginning and started quickly with a lot of intensity," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "We will need to do the same as both players now play for a world ranking in singles."
Brothers Jake and Jarred Wynan came up short of reaching the singles main draw. Jake dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Venezuelan Jesus Bandres, and Jarred Wynan lost to Srikar Alla of India, 6-4, 6-4.
"I am disappointed for Jake and Jarred, but at the same time they both set up good building blocks to the future," Jeffrey noted. "They are both striving to attain higher levels with their games."
