Men’s Tennis Heads to USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Louisiana men's tennis team continues a busy two-week stretch with a trip to the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships hosted by Alabama from Oct. 10-14 at the Alabama Tennis Center.

Singles and doubles winners will earn direct entry into the second major event of the year, the ITA National Indoor Championships, which take place in November at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Play begins at 8:30 a.m. on both Thursday and Friday with doubles followed by singles competition.

"This tournament is going to be a good barometer for our team," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "We are going to face players from five SEC schools and a number of other teams that are in the rankings year in and year out. I feel that we have the opportunity to send someone to the national tournament in either singles or doubles. We need to make sure that come out and compete hard in every match and leave everything we have on the court."

13 schools will be represented at the Regionals including Alabama, UAB, Auburn, Louisiana, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Samford, South Alabama, Troy and Tulane.

"Not only do we have an opportunity to face some quality competition, but this is a chance for our players to earn a regional and national ranking," Jeffrey added. "We have to take advantage of every opportunity we get."

Damian Farinola, Jake Wynan, Jarred Wynan, Hunter Johnson, Yates Johnson, Carl Alberton, Edgar Lopez and Will Huyton will compete for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Farinola and Lopez are coming off of a 3-1 performance at the Houston Futures as the pair reached the singles main draw. As a team, the Cajuns went 10-4 in singles competition at the USTA Houston Futures event.
