NEW ORLEANS – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns will honor world-renowned "Blue Dog" artist and Louisiana graduate George Rodrigue by wearing a special helmet decal during Saturdays game against Tulane in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

The decal features Rodrigue's famous Blue Dog image wearing a Cajuns shirt with a red fleur-de-lis on the front.

Rodrigue, who passed away on Dec. 14 in Houston at the age of 69, was a graduate of the university, which was then known as the University of Southwestern Louisiana.

"George was a true Cajun," Louisiana head coach Mark Hudspeth said.  "He was a big supporter of his alma mater all of his life and we are proud as a team to be able to recognize him tomorrow night.

"It is only fitting.  He is one of Louisiana's most notable artists and we will be honoring him at a Louisiana bowl game featuring two Louisiana schools," Hudspeth said.

Known primarily for his Louisiana landscapes during his early years, he gained national acclaim later in life with his series of "Blue Dog' paintings.  He also played a prominent role in helping the New Orleans Museum of Art come back from damage suffered during Hurricane Katrina.
