Men’s Tennis Splits Day One At HEB Tournament Of Champions

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team split a pair of matches at the 47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions on Friday. Louisiana claimed a 4-1 win over Western Michigan in the morning before falling in the nightcap to host Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, 4-2.

The Cajuns (6-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Western Michigan (8-6) earning the doubles point with wins at No.2 and 3 doubles. The duo of Jarred Wynan and Edgar Lopez clinched the point on court two defeating Aaron Wong/Stephen Payne 8-5.

Louisiana extended its lead to 3-0 after victories by Hunter Johnson and Damian Farinola. Johnson tabbed his team-leading seventh win of the spring with a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No.3 singles.

After the Broncos won No.2 singles, Rick de Groot clinched the match topping Nadin Indre 6-1, 7-6 on court one.

In the Corpus Christi match, singles were played first due to the format of the tournament. The Islanders (3-5) got out to a 3-0 advantage after wins at No.1,2 and 3 singles.

Louisiana picked up its first point of the match on court five as Lopez edged out Javier Pujol in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

Jarred Wynan pulled the Cajuns within a point after downing Guillaume Rauseo in three sets on court four, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), but Texas A&M - Corpus Chrisi went on to close out the match with a victory at No.6 singles.

The Cajuns close out the HEB Tournament of Champions tomorrow with a 9 a.m. match against UTSA in Corpus Christi, Texas.
