LAFAYETTE, La. – Another perfect day of weather helped the Ragin' Cajuns football team complete their first week of practice with an energetic two-hour session on the Louisiana practice field on Saturday morning.

The session started with the defense winning the “Cajun in the Ring” tackling drill but the offense ended the scrimmage by taking the goal line scrimmage in overtime.

“That was great,” head coach Mark Hudspeth said immediately after the practice. “We had unbelievable energy in that drill and it capped off a great practice.

Trailing 6-4 in the 12-play scrimmage, the offense rallied to score touchdowns on its final two snaps to force overtime.  Alonzo Harris started the rally by thundering in from the one and than Effrem Reed went over the top on the next play to force overtime.

In the overtime, the Cajuns gave the ball to Harris, who rushed for 881 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2012, and Harris did not disappoint.  He powered up the middle and barely crossed the goal line before the defense swarmed on him and brought him down to give the offense a 7-6 win.

The goal-line scrimmage capped off the fourth practice of the spring with Hudspeth being happy with the progress that they have shown in just five days.

“I've felt more energy this week than we've ever had,” Hudspeth said.  “We always practice hard, but the enthusiasm that we've seen this week is at an all-time high.”

All eyes have been on the play of the defense with James Willis taking over as defensive coordinator.

“This is going to be a work in progress as we continue to introduce the parts of the defense,” Hudspeth said.

“This scheme has the ability to create loss yardage plays and we need to avoid the big plays that we gave up last year.”

Although Hudspeth has been happy with the play of the Ragin' Cajuns returners so far this spring, he did single out freshmen linebacker Kevin Fouquier and defensive lineman Karmichael Dunbar II for their play this week.

“Foquier has stood out among the linebackers this week.  He has bulked up a little and really benefited from his time in the weight room,” Hudspeth said.

“Dunbar has leaned up and it shows in his performance.  He had a good fall for us and this is now his chance to break into the lineup,” Hudspeth added.

After completing their first four spring practices, the only four-practice week of the spring, the Cajuns will take a little break from the field to concentrate on the classroom.  Louisiana will take Sunday, Monday and Tuesday off, returning to hold their fifth practice of the spring on Wednesday afternoon (March 20).
