LAFAYETTE, La. – The offense completed the sweep against the defense, claiming their fourth win in as many spring scrimmages as part of the 13th practice for the Ragin' Cajuns football team on Wednesday afternoon.
The practice, the last in full gear before Saturday's Red vs. White game, started out as a normal practice until about the midway point when head coach Mark Hudspeth stopped the drills and move the team into Cajun Field for the final hour.
Cajun Field is only used for special practices and scrimmages during the year so the Cajuns players know that when they take the playing field, they need to be at their best.
Hudspeth has driven that into the heads of the Cajuns, one big reason why Louisiana has gone 10-1 at home over the last two seasons.
“It means a lot for our guys to be able to practice in Cajun Field and they know that they have to elevate their performance even higher when we are in it,” Hudspeth said.
“We were a little sluggish today in the practice drills. Of the 13 practices we've had, it probably had the least emotion. It wasn't all bad, just sluggish.
“I think our guys are looking ahead a little to Saturday and the end of practice. They are a little tired and ready for a break, but it is important that they pick themselves up and go out and have two more good practices to close the spring and send us to summer on a positive note.”
On Thursday, the offense treated the scrimmage as business as usual, another step towards getting ready for the opener at Arkansas on Aug. 30th.
“We all took a step forward and progressed in the areas where we needed to,” junior offensive guard Daniel Quave said following the practice.
“The offensive line has spent the spring trying to learn our identity. When you lose two starters like Leo (Bates) and O (Jaron Odom), your identity changes. We've spent a lot of time as a unit working on who we are and working on just getting better.
“Our offense has pretty much picked up where we left off last year, but we are also aware that we did lose some guys and we need to continue to work at getting better. I know that the offensive line is focused on making the running game better and I am personally working on recognizing and picking up defenses better,” Quave added.
“The offense really got after it this afternoon,” Hudspeth said.
“Our defense needs to do a better job of tackling and eliminate the big plays.
“We're still looking for our best 11 and I am sure that it is going to carry over into August. We've got a couple of spots set, but in other areas, we are still looking.
Hudspeth noted that with the addition of James Willis as defensive coordinator following the Cajuns New Orleans Bowl victory, the defense has been handed the additional challenge of learning a new defensive scheme and re-learning the approach that the coaching staff wants them to take on each play.
To make matters worse, the defense is going against a veteran quarterback leading a veteran offense with a majority of playmakers back and doing so while missing several pieces.
“The defense has been a little limited because they are missing about a half-dozen players who are going to factor into the lineup this fall. Jake Molbert (knee), Rodney Gillis, Tig Barksdale (sports hernia), two junior college corners (Cedric Tillman & Corey Trim) and (JC transfer) Marquis White aren't practicing right now and they will have an impact this fall.
The practice/scrimmage served as the 13th practice of the 15 allowed by the NCAA during the spring period. Louisiana will practice in partial uniforms only on Friday (April 19) this week before closing out spring with the Red & White game on Saturday. The spring game will be free to the public and be part of a busy day of Cajuns athletics.
On that day, the Louisiana men's and women's tennis teams will be hosting the Sun Belt Championships at the Culotta Tennis Center. Following the spring game, the baseball team will play the second game of a three-game series vs. Florida Atlantic at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field starting at 6:00 p.m.
