LAFAYETTE – The Ragin' Cajuns baseball program added to its 2013-14 signing class as head coach Tony Robichaux received a national letter of intent from Carson Baranik at the onset of the NCAA's regular signing period that began last Wednesday.
Baranik, who pitched his freshman season at LSU in 2012, is currently suiting up for Miami-Dade College in the junior college ranks. He will join the Cajuns for the 2013-14 academic year and be a junior with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
“Carson will add more depth and stability to next year's pitching staff,” Robichaux said. “He has the ability to come in and be an impact arm and he possesses a repertoire of pitches that can dominate his opponent.
“His experience will be very high having played in the SEC as a freshman and now pitching for one of the best junior college programs in the country.”
He's made 13 appearances for Miami-Dade, coached by former FIU head coach Danny Price. Baranik has proved to be a key member of the Sharks' pitching staff leading the unit in strikeouts with 59. He sports a 6-2 record with a 2.83 ERA and has held the opposition to 31 runs (20 earned) in 63 2/3 innings.
Baranik was awarded first team All-Southern Conference honors for his performance and has helped guide Miami-Dade to the Southern Conference championship and No. 2 ranking in the FCSAA state poll and No. 16 ranking in the NJCAA poll.
Baranik was a member of the 2012 LSU pitching staff prior to transferring to Miami-Dade. He appeared in three games out of the bullpen for the Tigers, allowing no runs on three hits in 3.2 innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
He was one of the top pitchers in the state of Louisiana during his high school career. The Bossier City, La., native was an all-state, all-district and all-city selection and a participant in the Louisiana High School All-Star Game during his senior season at Parkway High School.
In his final two seasons at Parkway, Baranik posted a 4-1 record in 2011 with three complete games and recorded a 1.70 ERA in 37 innings with 57 strikeouts and four walks. The right-hander recorded a 5-2 mark in 2010 with a 1.11 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 50 innings.
He also earned letters as a quarterback for the Parkway High football team and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and several campus organizations.
His father was a pitcher at Centenary College and grandfather, Dean, was a swimmer at Northwestern State.
