LAFAYETTE – Tulane built a five run lead in the first inning and held off a late charge by the Ragin' Cajuns to post a 7-5 midweek victory here Tuesday evening at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

Louisiana (22-10) drew within a run off of Tulane closer Ian Gibaut in the seventh inning after Blake Trahan's two-run home run cut the deficit to 6-5.

The Green Wave (17-18) added an insurance run in the eighth inning, scoring an unearned run for a 7-5 advantage.

Gibaut was forced to protect the lead and prevent a tie in the ninth inning after Jace Conrad and Dex Kjerstad singled and later moved up to second and third base. Gibaut struck out Ryan Leonards on the ninth pitch of the game's final at bat to secure the win.

Louisiana saw its four-game win streak in midweek games snapped and dropped consecutive games at “The Tigue” for the first time in 2013. It was only the Cajuns fourth home defeat in 22 outings.

The Green Wave, making their first appearance at “The Tigue” since March 2003, defeated the Cajuns for the seventh time in the past nine series meetings.

The Ragin' Cajuns are scheduled to face Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. at Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches on Wednesday, April 10 before traveling to Little Rock, Ark., to meet UALR in a three-game Sun Bet series Friday-Sunday, April 12-14.

The Cajuns run production came via the home run. Tyler Girouard provided three runs on a home run in the first inning, while Trahan added the other two runs on his home run in the seventh inning.

Kody Smith provided a strong relief effort for Louisiana, holding Tulane to two runs (one earned) off three hits over 7 1/3 innings after replacing Chase Traffica with no outs in the first inning.

Randy LeBlanc, who held the Cajuns scoreless for five straight innings after allowing three runs in the first inning off of Girouard's blast, collected the victory for Tulane. He was responsible for four runs (all earned) and held UL to three hits in six-plus innings.

The first six Green Wave hitters reach base and five runs crossed the plate in the top of the first inning. The Cajuns got three runs back in their half of the first inning on the three-run home run from Girouard.

Smith retired eight of the nine hitters he faced after relieving Traffica in the first inning. LeBlanc surrendered a single hit in the second and induced a double play ball to work around a one-out walk in the third inning and the score remained 5-3.

The Cajuns turned a double play on a bunt attempt in the fourth inning after the first two Green Wave batters reached base (walk, hit by pitch). A two-out single by Richard Carthon plated Garrett Cannizaro (leadoff walk) allowing Tulane to take advantage of the free bases.

LeBlanc surrendered a leadoff walk to Trahan in the fifth inning who then reached second on a stolen base. A pair of strikeouts aided him in keeping the Cajuns off the scoreboard.

LeBlanc preserved the three-run lead and extended his string of consecutive hitless frames to four by retiring the Cajuns in order in the sixth inning.

Smith kept pace facing only one over the minimum in both the fifth and sixth innings and inducing a double play for the third time to end the Green Wave's sixth inning at bat.

With the Cajuns first hit since the second inning, Trahan belted his two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh trimming the Tulane lead to 6-5.

BASES NOTED: The Cajuns are now 5-2 in midweek games and suffered their first midweek defeat since the LSU contest (Feb. 26)…Ryan Leonards stretched his current hitting streak to nine games when he doubled in the first inning…Dex Kjerstad increased his team-leading multiple-hit games total to 13 following a 2-for-5 performance…Kody Smith's 7 1/3 innings pitched marked the longest relief outing by a Cajuns pitcher in 2013…Smith had tossed 17 innings total in his previous seven appearances…The Cajuns three double plays turned marked the most since turning three at Southern Miss on March 10…Matt Hicks made his team-leading 16th appearance and tossed scoreless relief the final 1 2/3 innings…Blake Trahan's home run in the seventh inning gave him at least one base hit for the 24th time in 31 appearances…The Cajuns posted multiple home runs in a game for the third straight game and homered at least twice in four of the five games on the recent homestand that began last Tuesday vs. McNeese...Tuesday's game marked the lone meeting between the Ragin' Cajuns and Green Wave in 2013.
