Game Notes

WHAT'S ON TAP?  The Cajuns will look to continue their winning ways, and add to their current seven game winning streak, with a nonconference doubleheader with Southern Miss. on Wednesday, April 10 at 4:00 P.M. at Lamson Park.

CAJUN UPDATE:  The 25-11 Cajuns out-scored North Texas 23-2 in a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep in Denton, Texas this the past weekend.  The Cajuns used power at the plate and stellar pitching to breeze past the Mean Green.  As a team, Louisiana hit eight home runs in three games, including three from Nerissa Myers, and two from Matte Haack.

THE GOLDEN EAGLES: The Golden Eagles will make a stop in Lafayette as part of a nine game road trip, starting in Auburn, Alabama and finishing in Orlando, Florida, with stops in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia.  They are 11-29 on the season and 1-13 in C-USA play in 2013.  They are 0-4 against Sun Belt opponents this season, losing four times to Troy.  Offensively, the Golden Eagles are led by Caroline Walker with a .362 average (25-for-69) and 17 runs scored with 14 RBI.  In the circle they have featured three different starters, Kimberly Wagner has been the most prominent, starting nine games and holding a 6-3 record with a 3.22 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 63.0 innings pitched.  All stats and records are prior to Southern Miss' Tuesday game against Auburn.

SWEEPING THE SUN BELT AWARDS: After helping lead the Ragin' Cajuns softball team to a three-game sweep of North Texas, shortstop Nerissa Myers and pitcher Jordan Wallace have been named the Sun Belt Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.  Myers went 6-for-9 at the plate with eight RBI and three home runs, including a grand slam, and Wallace picked up 32 strikeouts over 14.0 shutout-innings.  This marks the third and fourth time this season a member of the Ragin' Cajuns has received the award.

WELCOME BACK NERISSA MYERS: In her first at-bat back from a five-week layoff with an ankle injury, Nerissa Myers hit a lead off home run in game one of the North Texas series.  Her offensive onslaught didn't stop there, however.  She doubled in a run in her next at bat before hitting a grand slam in her fourth at bat of the game.  She followed that up with a home run in game two of the doubleheader and knocked in eight runs on the day.

WALLACE KEEPS FANNING THEM: Sophomore pitcher Jordan Wallace struck out ten batters in four innings pitching in game one against North Texas.  She struck out 10-of-12 possible putouts before yielding to the bullpen.  In 14.0 innings against North Texas, she struck out 32 batters, including a career-high 16 on Sunday in a complete-game shutout.  She has now fanned a career-high 189 batters and averages 10.3 strikeouts every seven innings, which ranks 13th and 9th in the nation, respectively.

HAACK ATTACK:  Matte Haack hit her first career multi-homer game on Saturday in game one against North Texas, finishing the game 3-for-3 with two homers, three RBI and three runs scored.   She hit a two-run homer in the first inning, before following it up with a solo shot in the fifth inning.  She now has seven home runs on the season, two shy of her career-high.

DRIVING THEM IN: Three Cajuns rank in the top four in runs batted in the Sun Belt Conference. Shellie Landry reclaimed the conference lead over the weekend and now has 41 on the season, Sarah Draheim sits in second with 39 and Brianna Cherry is in fourth in the conference with 31 runs batted in.  Landry is 25th in the nation with 1.14 RBI/Game.

WALLACE IN THE SUN BELT: Sophomore pitcher Jordan Wallace holds a 6-2 record with a 2.02 ERA and 88 strikeouts in conference games this season.  In her career, she is 17-3 with a 1.86 ERA and 171 strikeouts against conference foes.

RUNS PER GAME: With 215 runs scored this season the Cajuns are atop the Sun Belt leaderboard.  They also rank 17th in the nation with 6.52 runs per game as of March 31.

FIRST-YEAR FOCUS: With three freshmen in the starting lineup for every game this season, the future is bright for the Cajuns.  Shellie Landry, Sara Corbello and Samantha Walsh have had a strong impact on the team in their first year of competition, combining for 15 HR and 81 RBI.  First-year players as a whole are batting .288 on the season (108-for-375) with 86 RBI, 16 HR, and 67 runs scored.  Last season a veteran Cajuns squad didn't send a freshman to the plate.

HOME RUNS...HOME RUNS EVERYWHERE: The Cajuns have hit 45 home runs on the season and lead the Sun Belt Conference.  As a team, the Cajuns rank 15th in the nation in home runs per game with 1.25.  Individually, the Cajuns have four batters in the top eight in the conference, leader Sarah Draheim with 10, Shellie Landry with eight and Brianna Cherry and Matte Haack tied at seven a piece.

DOMINATING THE DISH: Senior catcher Sarah Draheim has been a huge presence both behind and at the plate for the Cajuns this season.  She leads the team with 254 putouts, and has started every game at catcher.  She is batting .410 on the season and leads the conference with ten home runs and is second in RBI behind teammate Shellie Landry, with 39.  Draheim batted .250 in her first three seasons.

LET'S GET IT STARTED: The Cajuns have scored in the first inning in 20-of-36 games this season, and are 15-5 in those games.  The Cajuns have scored first in 28-of-36 games and hold a record of 21-7 when scoring first.
