LAFAYETTE, La. – Ragin' Cajuns pitcher Jordan Wallace has accepted an invitation to attend the 2013 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp, as announced by the Amateur Softball Association of America and USA Softball, Monday afternoon.
The tryouts will run from June 10-12 in Oklahoma City, Okla, at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex. The final roster will be announced on Friday, June 14, giving the team a month to prepare for the World Cup.
“I am very thankful for the opportunity to tryout and have a chance to represent my country,” Wallace said of the invitation. “I want to go in there, and represent Louisiana softball and earn a spot on the team.”
Wallace is one of six sophomores among the 32 athletes who will be competing for just 17 spots on the roster.
“It definitely helps me [for next season],” Wallace said of being one few sophomores invited. “I'm about to face the best hitters in the game and that will prepare me for my next two years here.”
Wallace just finished her second season with the Ragin' Cajuns, going 32-9 with 382 strikeouts and a 1.70 ERA. She led the Cajuns to their second straight NCAA Super Regional appearance, tossing 21.0 shutout innings against LSU and Northwestern State at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
In April, Wallace struck out 18 batters in a seven-inning game, setting the Louisiana record for K's in seven innings. It was just the 31st time in NCAA Division-I history that a pitcher fanned 18-or-more batters in seven innings.
The sophomore from Weatherford, Texas is 59-11 in two seasons, striking out 549 batters and posting a 1.94 ERA in 70 starts and 82 appearances. She has averaged 8.71 strikeouts per seven innings, which would place her second all-time at Louisiana.
If selected, Wallace will compete in three separate events in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The team opens with the World Cup of Softball VIII, on July 11-14, in Oklahoma City. Team USA will then travel to Surrey, British Columbia to compete in the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship from July 16-22, and finish up their tour in San Juan, Puerto Rico for the International Softball Federation (ISF) Women's World Championship/Pan American Games qualifier from August 5-18.
Wallace would be the second Cajun in as many years to land on the team, joining 2012 grad, Christi Orgeron, who played with team USA in 2011 and 2012.
