2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team
LAFAYETTE – Ragin' Cajuns baseball student-athlete Blake Trahan was named to the 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team, selected annually by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, on Wednesday.
Trahan, also named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, is the first Ragin' Cajun to be recognized as a Freshman All-American since Jonathan Lucroy in 2005.
He was one of nine freshman shortstops selected to the team. Trahan was joined by Alex Bregman (LSU), Kevin Newman (Arizona), Kal Simmons (Kennesaw State), Kevin Lachance (Md.-Balt. County), Kyle Brooks (North Florida), Travis Maezes (Michigan), Tyler Leffler (Bradley) and Mikey White (Alabama).
Trahan was the lone representative from the Sun Belt Conference on the 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team.
He joined Bregman, McNeese State's Bryce Kingsley and Southeastern Louisiana's Mason Klotzas the lone student-athletes from the state of Louisiana to receive the honor.
Trahan was the only freshman in Cajuns starting lineup during the 2013 season. The Kinder, La., native started 62 of Cajuns' 63 games at shortstop and maintained batting average above .300 since Feb. 20 (final 59 games). He hit safely in 48 of 62 games and ranked third on the team with 68 base hits.
Trahan drew team-high 30 walks against 27 strikeouts and was a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen bases.
As Louisiana's everyday shortstop, he accrued 178 assists which ranks Top 5 on the school's single-season chart. Trahan committed only seven errors in his last 147 chances and finished his rookie campaign with a .955 fielding percentage. He began the season, as a rookie at shortstop, with only two errors through first 88 chances
The rising sophomore is spending his summer playing collegiate league baseball with the Clarinda (Iowa) A's of the M.I.N.K. Baseball League.
