OXFORD, Miss. – The Ragin' Cajuns soccer team opened their 2013 season on Friday evening, falling to Ole Miss 4-0 at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in Oxford, Miss. The Rebels scored two goals in the 25th and 27th minutes of the first half, and added two more in the second half to defeat the Cajuns in the season opener.
"We played a very good SEC team tonight," head coach Scot Wieland said. "Their overall team speed was faster and they were a more sophisticated opponent. We did get better as the game went on, we just played a good team, it was that simple."
Ole Miss opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Addie Forbus scored the first goal of the season. Forbus got between the Cajuns defense and beat Kendall Graham to her left side, putting the ball in the corner of the goal.
The Rebels would add to their lead just two minutes later when Jenny Miller found the back of the net, beating Graham.
Ole Miss took eight shots in the first half, holding the 2-0 advantage going into the break.
Kendall Graham got the start between the pipes for the Cajuns, playing the first half and allowing two goals and making two saves. She was relieved in net by sophomore Cory DeMarco, to start the second half.
Ole Miss had solid chance early in the second half. After beating keeper Cory DeMarco, the shot caromed off the post. DeMarco got a piece of the rebound shot before it was cleared out by the Louisiana defenders.
They would eventually add two more goals in the second half, including Miller's second on a penalty shot in the 71st minute and a goal by Mindy McCalla in the 85th to add to the lead.
Cajuns saw their best scoring chance in the 80th minute when Elizabeth Manuel had a step on the defender on the right side. She would get a shot off but send it just left of the post for a goal kick.
Ole Miss peppered 20 shots in the game with eight reaching goal, and the Cajuns got just two shots off, both by Elizabeth Manuel, with one reaching the net.
Manuel's second shot was the Cajuns best opportunity of the game. She had a step on the defender while streaking down the right side, but her crossing shot went just wide of the post for a goal kick.
DeMarco would finish the game in net for the Cajuns making two saves.
"We have seen improvement each game," Wieland said after the game. "A few girls stepped up and played a lot better than in the exhibition game, including freshmen that we need to contribute. This made us even more ready for Jacksonville State on Sunday. Every game is a stepping stone to conference play for us."
The Cajuns will return home on Sunday when they take on Jacksonville State at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex. The game kicks off a five-game homestand for the team, where they will also play Southeastern, Southern, Northwestern State and Louisiana Tech.
