Volleyball To Hold Annual Red-White Scrimmage On Saturday

Fans can get first glimpse of 2013 Ragin' Cajuns
LAFAYETTE – Fans of the Louisiana volleyball team will be able to get their first glimpse at the 2013 edition when the squad holds its second-annual Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday at Earl K. Long Gym.
First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. Admission is free.
After finishing with a 16-16 record in 2012, the Ragin' Cajuns are expected to challenge for the Sun Belt Conference title under head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot, who has guided Louisiana to its best three-year win total (47) since 1997-99. Louisiana returns 10 letterwinners and five starters from last season, including four of its top five offensive threats.
Senior Lavinia Tataran is Louisiana's top returner on offense after averaging 2.69 kills per set followed by outside hitter Kelly Wiesmann (2.13 kills/set). Andrea Hole, who is competing to replace departed starter Mandi Gavin at setter, averaged 1.97 kills per set for Louisiana in 2012 while finishing second on the team in digs per set (2.71), assists (102) and service aces (32).
Senior Tonice White is the Ragin' Cajuns top returning defender at the net after blocking 73 attempts last season while junior libero Caitlyn Auxilien returns after leading the team and finishing seventh in the SBC with 4.02 digs per set.
The Ragin' Cajuns officially open the 2013 season on Aug. 30-31 when they travel to Houston to compete in the Houston Baptist Invitational. Louisiana will open the two-day event on Aug. 30 against UT Pan American in a 4:30 p.m. contest before resuming play on Aug. 31 against host HBU at 9:30 a.m. and Nebraska-Omaha at 5 p.m.
Louisiana will officially open its 12-match home schedule on Sept. 6-7 when it hosts the inaugural Sawyer Camillo Volleyball Classic. The Ragin' Cajuns will open the four-team, two-day event on Sept. 6 against Nicholls State at 7 p.m. before returning to action on Sept. 7 to face Alcorn State at noon and Houston at 6 p.m.
