Soccer to Open Sun Belt Season at Georgia State and WKU

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Soccer team will open Sun Belt Conference play on Friday when they take on conference newcomer Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga, at 6 CST. Louisiana will continue league play on Sunday when it takes on Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky, at noon.

The Cajuns will be playing their first game in over 12 days, and first game on the road since Aug. 23 when they traveled to Oxford, Miss. to take on Ole Miss. Louisiana was scheduled to play Nicholls State in Thibodaux on Sept. 8, but it was moved to Lafayette due to rain. The Cajuns were also slated to play at Houston on Sept. 20, but that was cancelled, also due to rain.

The last time the Cajuns played they swept a weekend series, picking up wins against Prairie View A&M (5-1) on Sept. 13 and Mississippi Valley State (3-0) on Sept. 15.

Freshman Annika Schmidt had the best weekend of her career, scoring four goals against Prairie View, and one against Mississippi Valley State. She was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week on the following Tuesday.

She leads the team with 9 goals on the season, adding one assist for 19 points in nine games, which is the third most in a season at Louisiana.

It will be the first meeting between Louisiana and Georgia State, and the first Sun Belt game of the season for each. WKU holds a 10-1-2 lead all-time over Louisiana, playing to a 1-1 tie in the last meeting. Before that, WKU owned a four game winning streak.

The Cajuns will stay on the road when they take on ULM on Oct. 6, before returning home for a three-game homestand, starting on Oct. 11 against UALR.
