DOHA, Qatar – Sophomore Ragin' Cajuns golfer Thomas Strandemo had a strong showing at the Qatar Open this past weekend finishing in third place with a three-round score of even-par (216) at the Doha Golf Club.
Â
Strandemo was tied for the lead with 2013 British Amateur Champion Garrick Porteous going into the final round after firing a 4-under 68, the low round of the tournament, in the second round. A final round score of 76 moved him down two spots to third in a field made up of 120 golfers from 26 countries.
Â
Max Williams, ranked No. 1,508 in the Official World Golf Ranking, won the event with a final score of five-under (211) and earns the automatic spot into the Qatar Masters event on the European Tour.
Â
"I am very excited and happy for Thomas regarding his offseason performance in the Qatar Open," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Thomas put himself in position to win a very prestigious event on an extremely difficult golf course against a very competitive field. Minus a few errors coming down the stretch, he certainly could of found the winners circle.
Â
"I am anxious to get Thomas back on campus as I am very confident that his performance in the Qatar Open along with going head-to-head with Porteous will certainly manifest in his game this spring. He is a player that is constantly improving each and every semester and feel that he has taken a large step forward this past fall and winter."
Â
Strandemo and the Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Feb. 10-11 with the start of the spring season at the Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
