MONROE – Marvin Williams scored seven of his 16 points in overtime while Tylor Ongwae posted a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds as ULM overcame a triple double by Elfrid Payton and defeated the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 103-98, in double overtime on Saturday in the Sun Belt Conference opener at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
ULM (4-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) built a pair of 11-point leads before the Cajuns (9-5, 0-1 Sun Belt) answered sending the game to overtime with three free throws by Xavian Rimmer with 3.1 seconds remaining in regulation before Payton made one of two free throws with 15 seconds remaining in the first extra period.
Payton, a junior from Gretna, La., posted career highs with 34 points and 11 assists while tying a career-best with 11 rebounds. Shawn Long scored 21 points with six blocks for the Cajuns before fouling out in the first extra session.
"We gave up 71 percent shooting from the floor in overtime with a couple of baskets coming with time running down on the clock," Louisiana head coach Bob Marlin said. "The team that won deserved to win. Credit our guys for fighting back and getting it to overtime, but rebounding was an issue during the game and it showed."
Payton opened the second overtime period with a pair of free throws before Ongwae tied the game for the 11th time at 87-87 with a driving bucket with 4:28 remaining. Williams followed with a three-point play for the Warhawks with 2:57 left before a made free throw by Nick Coppola and a dunk by DeMondre Harvey gave ULM a 93-87 advantage.
Williams gave the Warhawks a 95-87 lead with a layup with 1:24 left before the Cajuns cut the lead to 96-93 on a driving dunk by Payton with 51 seconds remaining. But the Cajuns would get no closer as Ongwae would eventually convert a three-point play with 17 seconds left to help seal the win.
Jayon James and Amos Olatayo each added 16 points for ULM with R.J. McCray chipping in with 11. The Warhawks held a 54-44 advantage on the glass, including 21 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points.
Steven Wronkoski added 11 points for Louisiana, which finished 32-for-75 from the floor and 25-for-35 from the free throw line. Rimmer added nine points for the Cajuns while Kevin Brown added seven.
