NEW ORLEANS, La. – Abby Johnson picked up two of Louisiana's eight wins on the weekend and advanced to the finals of Flight 2 singles as the Ragin' Cajuns wrapped up their fall season over the weekend at the UNO Big Easy Invite.
"It's been a productive fall; each week the team has challenged themselves and their opponents," head coach Greg Harkins said. "We saw dramatic improvement in fitness and competitive intensity. Most players got between 15 and 20 matches this fall which gave us some valuable experience as we transition into the off season. We will continue to work and improve through the winter months as we turn towards preparation for the Spring. The squad has worked hard and I am proud of them."
Johnson, along with Alexandra Way, each went 2-1 in singles play on the weekend with Johnson playing some of her best tennis of the season before falling in a close match to Southeastern Louisiana's Anna Bryukhova (6-4, 6-2) in the flight final.
She reached the final with an opening-round bye, followed by a win over Southeastern's Madina Vorotnikova (6-4, 7-6 (1)) to get to the semifinals. One round later she knocked off New Orleans' Marta Sans (6-4, 6-2) to qualify for the finals.
Way was also in the second singles flight of the tournament and made hay in the consolation portion of the bracket. After falling to West Virginia's Habiba Shaker (5-7, 6-2, 10-5) in the opening round, she rebounded with a victory over Carmen Nelson (6-1, 6-2) of Xavier (La.) before advancing to the consolation final with a win over Meghan deBaroncelli (6-2, 6-3) of Loyola (N.O.). Unfortunately, illness got the better of Way prior to the final, forcing a withdrawal before playing the match.
Juliette Clement worked her way into the quarterfinals of the Flight 3 singles bracket, using a bye and a second-round win (6-2, 7-5) over Sha'Nel Bruins of Xavier (La.) to advance before falling to Southeastern's Avika Sagwal (6-1, 6-3).
Clement and Elena Sava also picked up a doubles win (8-4) over Southeastern's team of Duran/Sagwal in the second round of the doubles bracket before falling to Laraibi/Rashad of New Orleans (8-3).
