BATON ROUGE, La. – The Ragin' Cajun golf team finished the first day of the David Toms Intercollegiate in fifth place after carding a 36-hole score of 41-over par (617) at the University Club on Saturday.
Louisiana is six strokes back of finishing in the top 3 as all 12 teams in the field finished the day over par for the tournament.
Host No. 4 LSU and Southeastern Louisiana are tied for the team lead at 20-over (596). No. 34 Winthrop (+35, 611), Mercer (+40, 616) and the Ragin' Cajuns (+41, 617) round out the top 5 teams.
"This golf course is a great test, and I am confident that the team will come out tomorrow and apply the lessons learned today," head coach Theo Sliman said. "A good player needs to be able to stay completely in the present on this style of course and exemplify complete patience, we did not do that today as a collective group. We are going to stick to our approach from the start of the week. We have a great opportunity tomorrow, and we will need a complete group effort in order for us to accomplish our goals for this week."
LSU's Benjamin Taylor sits atop the individual leaderboard with a two-round score of 1-under (143). Taylor was the only player to post a sub par score on the day.
Both Fernando Cruz Valle and Haraldur Magnus find themselves in the top 25 heading into the final round. Cruz Valle moved up eight spots after carding a second round 74 (+2) to finish in a tie for 12th at 7-over (151), while Magnus was one stroke back in a tie for 16th. Magnus had the Cajuns low round of the day shooting a 73 (+1) in the first 18 holes to take an early lead at the event.
Thomas Strandemo and Ross Davis are tied for 36th at 13-over (157). Louis Kelly rounded out the scoring for Louisiana in a tie for 58th at 19-over (163).
Individually, freshman Paul San heads into the final day in a tie for 31st at 12-over (156), while Joseph Burgess is in a tie for 55th at 18-over (162).
The Ragin' Cajuns are paired with Mercer and Central Arkansas for the final round. Play gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.
