LAFAYETTE, La. - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team signed Triston Elston and Grant Welch to a national letter of intent for the 2015-16 season, head coach Theo Sliman announced on Friday.

"We are extremely excited and honored to announce the addition of Triston and Grant to our program," Sliman said. "They are both solid students and talented players with a huge ceiling that fit our model and philosophy. We confidently believe that their best golf is ahead of them, and they will make great student-athletes."

Elston, a native of Baton Rouge, La., is rated No. 106 in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Polo National Golf Rankings. The Catholic High product brings a 73.2 stroke average and has been largely successful in the last two years finishing second at the 2014 Louisiana State Junior Championship, third at the Bubba Conlee National Junior Tournament and sixth at the David Toms Foundation Shreveport Junior. Elston carded a career best round of 67 twice at the State Junior Championship and once at the David Toms event. He also has six rounds in the 60s in his last eight events.

"Triston has had a very solid junior campaign competing on a national stage and earning a strong national ranking," Sliman noted. "He is an extremely good ball striker and a gritty competitor, which is a recipe for a strong Division I golfer."

Welch comes to the Cajuns from Runnels High School where he is a two-sport star helping guide the basketball team to a state playoff appearance in 2014. A Baton Rouge, La. native as well, Welch posted a top 25 finish at the Arrowhead Junior at the Bluffs this past summer and notched a third place finish at the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T in 2013. Welch also placed fourth at the LHSAA State tournament this past spring.

"I am very keen on bringing in Grant as a multi-sport athlete," Sliman said. "He is a highly accomplished basketball player at Runnels, and I anticipate him to bring that competitive edge to our program. Grant's body of work in his golf game is fundamentally sound, and I feel that it will blossom once on campus here."

"It has been an absolute pleasure recruiting both of these young men, as they are not only gifted and talented golfers, but they both come from great families. I am honored to have them become a part of our family here at UL and greatly look forward to having them on campus in August."
