Cajuns Fall To Red Wolves In Tournament Opener
11/27/2014 6:52:00 PM | Volleyball
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Ragin' Cajuns saw their best season in 24 years come to an end on Thursday, falling 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-15) to Arkansas State in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Strahan Coliseum.
Louisiana (20-13), who finished the season with 20 wins for the first time since 1990, could never get things going offensively, hitting a season-low -.066 for the match, despite Andrea Hole's 21st double-double of the season.
The third-seeded Red Wolves (21-9) picked up their third win of the year over the Cajuns, and their second-ever win over UL in the SBC Tournament in four tries. They will advance to take on either No. 2 Texas State or No. 7 Georgia State in the tournament semifinals on Friday.
Sara Mossakowski and Chanelle Gardner had six kills apiece to lead the Cajuns, while Andrea Hole finished with 15 assists and 12 digs. Hole finished with 1,290 assists for the season, the third-most in a single season in UL history.
Senior libero Caitlyn Auxilien had a team-high 13 digs for the Cajuns, finishing with 505 digs on the season, a career high. She finishes her career third all-time at UL with 1,784 digs.
Gardner and Kae Kae Lockhart picked up three blocks apiece, but the Red Wolves finished with 11 blocks as a team on their side, led by Jessica Uke's seven.
The Cajuns hit just .027 in the first set, led by three kills from Mossakowski as the Red Wolves staked themselves to a 1-0 lead with a 25-15 victory. A-State snapped an early 6-6 tie with four straight points and did not trail the rest of the way in the set, scoring five of the final six points while hitting .027.
In the second set the Cajuns had it tied up at 10-10 early on before the Red Wolves scored 15 of the set's final 20 points to go into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
The third set followed a similar script with UL finding itself tied at 8-8 after early kills from Mossakowski and Hole before the Red Wolves went on a 12-4 run to open up the set and put itself on the cusp of a sweep. UL got scores from Mossakowski and Hole once again, but A-State closed it out on a kill from Kari Castanon-Hill.
